For Back Home
‘For Back Home’
Glazed Porcelain, Manila Rope
11.5” x 13” x 13” (ceramic)
34” x 15” x 15” (net)
Balikbayan boxes are a unique representation of the hard work of overseas family members and their enduring tether to loved ones in the Philippines.
For example, my dad had once sent: VHS tape recordings of Ren & Stimpy, mini boxes of cereal, and assorted children’s books — among other essentials.
The almost half-decade industry is still going strong with hundreds of thousands boxes shipped to the Philippines each year.
This piece was created for the group exhibit “Working Overtime” (2025) bridging the Filipino/Diasporic spirit and the community’s love for basketball. Curated by Kristofferson San Pablo
